Demonic Slaughter - 'Downfall' (2013)

Demonic Slaughter

'Downfall'

Pagan Recs.

2013

Demonic Slaughter is a polish black metal horde from Lublin, Poland. The band was founded in 2006, it has 4 full-lenghs albums on account together with few shorter materials. 'Downfall' is their last release.
The last LP 'Revelations of Death' had some death metal relish (swedish, to be more precise), this time the guys decided to create pure black metal hell. Well, I must say that even it's not very revealing, the music it's very nice (let say, haha). Harsh vocals, fast, depressive yet often catchy riffs (especially great 'Cold and Haunted') and a drummer devastating his implement creates kinda dark atmosphere. Black metal maniacs should feel good with this kind of tunes. The production is very stifling, so that you have to focus on what's you're currently listenning to. For some folks it might be a flaw, but I think that in this case it's a big advantage - forget about listenning to this stuff in a bus or during washing the dishes and absorb the cult (haha)! Too feel the real obscurity of 'Downfall' you have to spare some time to this music.
There are not many slow parts this time. I noticed though that in some moments ('Dark Matter Constelation', or especially 'Martwa Cisza') the music is more similar to the kindred band of one of musicians - Xaosis. So the music slows down a bit, and goes into more rock/melanacholic areas. It is a nice sign of variety, and more of such elements on the future releases will be welcome by me with open arms. Also this release is full of some background noises and wild screams. Nothing new indeed, but defenitely adds some more evil element to this grim atmosphere.
The material at first seems to be very monotonous and boring, but after some replays it defenitely shows a listenner it's 'better' side. This seeming monotony together with stifling production creates very nasty climate and indeed good music. Everyone who loves cold and haunted (hehe) sound should defenitely give a try to 'Downfall'.

From danish SVARTSOT:

'The recording phase of the album is now virtually complete. All guitars, basses, drums, nasty vocals, brutal vocals, fucking demented vocals, other vocals, bagpipes, whistles and mandolins. All that remains is to capture the raw sound of a thousand swans being headbutted into unconsciousness. We have to leave those til last as it makes a right mess of Lasse's recording booth. It has to be authentic. The digital patches you can download of a thousand swans being headbutted into unconsciousness are fucking rubbish, to be honest.'

'Short update from the band on the new album: "It's not like we're sitting on our asses and do nothing these days... Oh, no! There was a lot of turbulence and chaos regarding the cover artwork and layout for the new album, but now, finally, everything starts to get its final shape and we're currently close to an end with all the process. Puzzle start to fall into place! We are cooperating with an amazing Artist known as Teitan Arts and the artwork will be just... monumental! All those interested will have opportunity to check out the front cover of the upcoming album at special exhibition of Teitan Arts' works at this concert: https://www.facebook.com/events/607471332606637/ More news to come shortly'

Hellveto - "Damnaretis" (2012)

Hellveto

"Damnaretis"

Pagan Recs.

2012

Hellveto is a one-man project, founded in 1995 in Ostrołęka (Poland) by L.O.N., and is playing black metal with orchestral elements and lyrics about paganism. "Damnaretis" is it's (let me count...) 15th full lenght album.
It took two years for L.O.N. to transform his visions into another dark soundscape. Normally he is known to record even two orthree albums a year! But to be honest I am glad that he took a break. The previous opus, "Wiara, Nadzieja..., Potępienie" was simply very weak. Instead of good ideas we had there only insipid, blurred riffing with tiring, overused orchestrations. Luckily "Damnaretis" is different (and better). Although the music hasn't change very much - it's still very dark black metal with epic atmosphere - it's again more powerful. I have an impression that orchestral parts are fewer this time, and more place is filled by pure metal section and more melancholic parts. Thanks to that the album isn't tiring like the previous one. Moreover - it sounds fantastic! Also camparing "Damnaretis" to last albums, the music is much slower. But it's great, because I've always more like those slower, atmospheric moments than fast ones. The riffs are really good, and the atmosphere is often highlighted by some relishes - strange noises, wind effects, desperate clean singing etc. Oh, and about LON's vocals - there are perfect! The guy knows how to use his voice - he screams in very dramatic way which is hard to mistaken with anyone's. Taking it all together we receive something unordinary - because it's hard to compare Hellveto's music to something else. Maybe Limbonic Art or Summoning? But even it is far from this polish (one-man, hehe) horde...
The sound has power in it because of a great production. LON accustomed fans to the exellent level of his albums and "Damnaretis" is not different. Really, no reproaches here. The orchestral parts sound very epic, while a metal section has gloomy, dark feeling.
To sum up: it's good to hear a new Hellveto album after a small break. It's not a revolutionery thing, but it's defenitely a good piece of epic black metal art. If you like darkness and grimness in music, "Damnaretis" will be something that you'll enjoy very much.
